Denmark is full of surprises when it comes to scenic landscapes. Last month I went to Skagen, a popular holiday destination with white sand beaches where the two seas meet (Baltic and the Northern sea).
And what better way to get to know a new town, than to stay in the Color Hotel Skagen, known to be the best hotel in the area.
COLOR HOTEL SKAGEN
The Color Hotel Skagen was built in 1968 and is Skagen’s only four-star hotel. With renovations and expansions throughout the years, the hotel presents itself with a very modern and contemporary style.
The hotel thrives in Skagen as a light and warm place to enjoy a weekend break or even a week with your family. Between several types of rooms and apartments there is something for everyone.
The hotel also features a restaurant, outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and several other amenities perfect for a break away.
From a beautiful walk around the heather covered hills just behind the hotel or a bike ride to the town, possibilities are endless. I spent two nights at the Color Hotel Skagen and I wish I had stayed longer because I had a wonderful time unwinding from the city life.
LOCATION
To get to the Color Hotel Skagen I left Copenhagen early morning on a Friday, ready for a weekend of fun! Me and my husband drove from Copenhagen to Ebletoft – Sjællands Odde where we took the ferry. It was quite an easy morning driving towards Skagen and we got there by lunch time!
The hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Frederikshavnsvej train station if you’re not thinking of driving there. Also from the hotel to the town centre you can walk, drive or cycle. It’s all within a maximum distance of 5-20 minutes.
MY ROOM AT COLOR HOTEL SKAGEN
With a great variety of rooms and apartments the Color Hotel Skagen has one of the most diverse hotels I have seen recently, aiming to make the most of your holiday time. You can chose between suites, superior rooms, double and single rooms and even apartments for four to six people fully equipped with kitchen and balconies.
During my stay I got the chance to enjoy a superior room, beautifully decorated with a maritime style and photos from the seaside life in Skagen. It transported me straight to those beach memories of when I was a child and we would all go together as a family to enjoy the summer by the sea!
My room was simple but stylish with a large bed, soft sheets and large pillows. It had a modern large desk, flat screen TV and two comfortable sofas. The bathroom was really nice too with a massage/rain shower.
At night time it was really fresh and quiet which was perfect for the warm weather that we experienced during the day so we just kept the window open and we could hear the crickets and the wind through the fields which was lovely.
TRIPLE RELAX: POOL, JACUZZI AND SAUNA
The highlight feature of the Color Hotel Skagen that makes it stand out as the best for me was the outdoor pool, the Jacuzzi and the Finnish sauna. An area of fun, pleasure and relaxation like no other!
A swim in the pool followed by a session at the Jacuzzi was my routine pretty much most every day. It was really enjoyable to lie down on the chairs with soft cushions around the pool reading a book and recharging.
Luckily the sun was out and the weather was great which made my time at the hotel even better. Although I must mention that these facilities are open all year so no worries if you’re thinking to visit during the winter.
The courtyard area by the pool also deserves a mention. I was the best place to have a quick break from the sun while having lunch on my first day at the hotel and it was super popular with other guests too.
OTHER AMENITIES AND ACTIVITIES
The Color Hotel Skagen has other engaging amenities and activities to make the most of your stay. On top of the many cycle paths around the hotel and hiking trails to the beach, the hotel offers services such as bicycle rental, free parking for all guests, a fitness room and even miniature golf.
I had never played mini golf before so I had to try it out! The miniature golf course if just by the apartments and you can rent clubs and balls in reception for a 9 holes course. It was so much fun that I want to do it again in the future.
I was also impressed with the activity room they have in the hotel. With a pool table, table tennis table, darts board and other games you can have the best evening entertainment ever!
EATING AND DRINKING AT COLOR HOTEL SKAGEN
From breakfast to dinner there are so many choices when it comes to eating and drinking in the Color Hotel Skagen that even when out and about in Skagen we end up having most meals at the hotel.
Every morning the delight of a breakfast buffet gave a boost of energy to go out and experience the best of Skagen. There was a wide range of food from freshly cooked bacon, scrambled or soft boiled eggs, sausages and pancakes to different types of bread, cereals and marmalades. I loved the fresh fruit juices and the organic coffee morning!
During the day if you are just staying at the hotel, the snacks in the courtyard from the Café Holger are an excellent option. There is a reasonable variety of offers from seafood to burgers and our favourite was the nachos with cheese for day snacks and shrimps for dinner!
The atmosphere for dinner is super relaxed in a cosy space just near the hotel bar and we had live music both Friday and Saturday with the house pianist.
Other options for dinner is the Holger Restaurant which has a seasonal menu and a la carte dishes with a great walk-in wine cabinet with many options to choose from.
Even if you don’t have dinner at the hotel you can still enjoy the relaxed atmosphere by the hotel bar.
THINGS TO DO AROUND THE HOTEL
Skagen has many attractions that make the town well worth a visit even if you don’t live in Denmark and are just taking some holidays.
Just 6 minute cycling from the Color Hotel Skagen is the sand-buried church and Skagen’s town. Other attractions in the area include the Grenen; where the two seas meet, the Råbjerg Mile; a large sand dune and some interesting museums like the Bamsemuseum which is a teddy-bear museum.
If you want to go to the beach you can go for a nice 12 minute walk and watch a stunning sunset!
OVERALL OPINION
The Color Hotel Skagen is a friendly and relaxing hotel with many activities to make your weekend or holidays very special!
With comfortable and spacious rooms and so many variety of food choices both in the hotel cafe and restaurant it was difficult to leave. The staff made my stay even better with their affable and warm reception every time I had a question about the hotel or Skagen.
Overall I recommend the hotel to anyone that is thinking of going and exploring Skagen at any point of the year and if possible for more than a weekend. With such a good time out there I wish I had stayed more and I was completely in love with the relaxed atmosphere, just what you want when you’re on holidays!

So…I love this. Denmark is on my list of places to visit. My mother went there when she was young and carefree and has many fond memories and amazing pics. So, I’ve wanted to go for a long time. Then when Anthony Bourdain featured Noma on Parts Unknown I was hooked. I wasn’t sure where I’d stay, but you might have just sealed the deal on that for me, lol. This hotel seems well-appointed and in a great location. Your pictures are amazing, so that could be it, LOL. Thanks for sharing, I’m definitely going to keep this on my list of places I might stay!
